Welcome!

The social determinants of health (SDH) are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. These forces and systems include economic policies and systems, development agendas, social norms, social policies and political systems. (World Health Organization)

Specific aims:
  • Organize an interest group to address social determinants of health (SDH) and discuss relevant SDH themes at dinner meetings
  • Interact with related disciplines such as the Center for Health Equity, Center on Race and Social Problems, Public Health, and community organizations.
  • Develop stronger connections with our surrounding Pittsburgh Community
  • Engage students and residents in research and evidence-based advocacy on SDH

  • Health behaviors
  • Geographical disparities in healthcare utilization, income and premature mortality
  • Structural racism and/or discrimination
  • Economic development
  • Environmental factors
  • Financial crisis
  • Tax policy and social welfare programs
  • Urban development
  • Globalization
