First meeting of the 2013-2014 school year!
UPDATE: Check out this link for more cool information about addressing crime and violence in Chicago:
Hi everyone! The SDH Interest Group is holding its first evening discussion club of the year this coming Thursday, Sept 26 at 6 pm in rooms 349 A&B of Scaife Hall. Dinner will be provided. For this first meeting we'll focus on a two things:
First of all we'll be introducing the club and talking about what this year holds for us. If you're interested in helping out with the club this will be a great way to meet everyone involved. We have a number of very approachable and enthusiastic faculty members at all of our meetings, making these evening sessions a great way to connect with them and hear about other opportunities. We also try to try to keep these meetings as interdisciplinary as possible, so they're also a great way to connect with students in other domains of the health sciences.
Secondly, we'll be holding a discussion about how physicians and other healthcare workers can get involved with community violence intervention. This discussion will be in preparation for our introductory lunch talk on Sept 30th. We'll be screening a short video about violence intervention programs to get the discussion started.
For more information on violence prevention, check out the National Network of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program's website: http://nnhvip.org/
There are also several papers that have been published on these programs if you're interested in learning more:

Hope to see everyone there on the 26th!
