April Discussion Club

The April meeting will be held Thursday, April 18th at 6pm in rooms 349 A&B of Scaife Hall. We'll be joined this month by Dr. Alan Murdock, a UPMC trauma surgeon, and possibly some of his collaborators, who will help lead a discussion on Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs. These are generally trauma center-based programs that move beyond simply treating violence-related trauma to addressing some of the social factors that led the patient to end up in the situation in the first place. Check out the NNHVIP webpage for some examples of current programs.

Can we as physicians really do something to address the social determinants of violence? It's a really exciting prospect and one that could even act as a model for other SDH-related interventions! Come and hear more on the 18th, it promises to be a very interesting discussion. If you're interested in these programs and want to get a bit more background before we meet, check out this paper (there's a really interesting discussion addendum at the end):
Cooper C, Eslinger DM, Stolley PD. Hospital-based violence intervention programs work. J Trauma. 2006;61(3):534-7.

And if you just can't get enough, here's a more recent paper:
Smith R, Dobbins S, Evans A, et al. Hospital-based violence intervention: Risk reduction resources are essential for success. J Trauma Acute Care Surg. 2013 Apr;74(4):976-82

Hope to see everyone there!
